The decrease in applicants as a result of Trump administration policies as well as the pandemic has left the fee-based agency USCIS out of funds. USCIS has threatened to furlough more than 13,000 employees starting in August if it is not able to get more funding from Congress. If more than 70% of USCIS employees are furloughed, tens of thousands of applicants for naturalization will continue to wait in limbo for their chance to complete their naturalization ceremony and oath. The delays are particularly concerning because of the already-existing backlog caused by coronavirus closures, as well as the upcoming election.
